Understanding Chronic Sinusitis
Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment Options

A sinus infection that clears up after a week or two is one thing. Feeling congested, dealing with facial pressure, or constantly clearing mucus from your throat for months is another.
When sinus symptoms become part of your normal routine, it may be more than a series of unrelated infections. Chronic sinusitis, also called chronic rhinosinusitis, is characterized by certain nasal and sinus symptoms lasting at least 12 weeks, with a healthcare provider using examination and, when appropriate, additional testing to confirm the diagnosis.
At Augusta Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers, understanding why symptoms keep returning is an important part of evaluating patients with ongoing sinus concerns.
What Does Chronic Sinusitis Feel Like?
Chronic sinusitis does not necessarily feel like being sick all the time. Some people notice congestion that never fully goes away. Others may have good days and bad days but rarely feel completely clear.
Common symptoms include nasal congestion, difficulty breathing through the nose, postnasal drip, facial pressure or tenderness, thick nasal drainage, and a reduced sense of smell. Headaches, cough, sore throat, fatigue, ear discomfort, and bad breath can occur as well.
The effect on daily life can be easy to underestimate. Poor nasal breathing can make sleep less comfortable, while persistent drainage or congestion may become distracting at work, during exercise, or while spending time with family.
Why Does Chronic Sinusitis Happen?
There is not always one obvious cause.
Inflammation can interfere with the normal drainage of mucus from the sinuses. Allergies may contribute to ongoing inflammation, while nasal polyps or structural problems inside the nose can make drainage more difficult. Chronic inflammation may be influenced by several factors, including nasal polyps, allergies in some patients, structural concerns, environmental irritants, and certain underlying medical conditions.
This is one reason simply treating each episode as another sinus infection may not address the bigger picture. The symptoms may look similar, but the factors contributing to them can be different.
How Is Chronic Sinusitis Diagnosed?
An ENT does more than ask how congested you feel.
Your provider may ask how long your symptoms have lasted, whether they come and go, whether you have allergies, and what you have already tried. An examination can provide additional information about the nose and sinuses.
Depending on your symptoms, an ENT may use nasal endoscopy to look inside the nasal passages and sinus openings. CT imaging can also provide a closer look at the sinus anatomy and help identify inflammation or structural issues. Allergy testing may be considered when allergies could be contributing to the problem.
At Augusta Breathe Free, on-site CT imaging is available as part of the practice’s diagnostic capabilities.
What Are the Treatment Options?
There is no single treatment that is appropriate for every person with chronic sinusitis. The right approach depends on what is causing or contributing to the inflammation.
Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include medical management aimed at reducing inflammation and improving sinus drainage, allergy management when allergies are involved, or treatment of structural problems affecting the nasal passages.
For some patients whose symptoms continue despite appropriate medical care, a procedure may be considered. Augusta Breathe Free offers balloon sinuplasty, an in-office option that uses a small balloon to expand certain blocked sinus pathways. It is not appropriate for every patient, so an ENT evaluation is needed to determine whether it fits the patient’s condition and anatomy.
The goal is to identify factors contributing to the symptoms and discuss treatment options appropriate for the individual’s diagnosis and needs.
When Should You See an ENT?
You do not have to wait until sinus symptoms become unbearable before getting evaluated.
An ENT evaluation may be worth considering when congestion or drainage persists for weeks, sinus pressure keeps returning, you repeatedly experience what seem like sinus infections, or symptoms begin interfering with sleep, work, exercise, or other parts of your routine.
It is also reasonable to seek an evaluation when you are unsure whether allergies, recurrent infections, or a structural issue may be behind your symptoms. Getting a clearer diagnosis can help you understand why the problem keeps returning and what options may be appropriate.
Living With Sinus Symptoms Shouldn’t Become Your Normal
Chronic sinusitis can be frustrating precisely because it can become easy to accept. You may start sleeping with your mouth open, carrying tissues everywhere, or simply assuming that constant congestion is something you have to live with.
Persistent symptoms are worth discussing with a healthcare provider to determine whether further evaluation or treatment may be appropriate.
Augusta Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers provides sinus and allergy care for patients in Augusta and surrounding communities, with evaluations designed to identify potential causes and discuss appropriate treatment options. If persistent sinus symptoms are affecting how you sleep, work, exercise, or breathe, an ENT evaluation can help you better understand what may be contributing to them.
